The local community was left astounded by the unexpected transformation of a canal in Venice as it suddenly took on a striking fluorescent green hue. This peculiar occurrence has prompted the authorities to initiate an investigation, aiming to uncover the cause behind the incident.
A Canal in Venice Turned Green
On 28th May, an area of the renowned Grand Canal displayed a neon green color emanating from the Rialto Bridge and gradually expanding. While various speculations have emerged, linking the incident to climate activists, no individual or group has come forward to claim responsibility for this puzzling event.
On a Sunday, residents were the first to notice the peculiar shade, capturing images of gondoliers peacefully navigating the vibrant, highlighter green waters and sharing them online. The sight immediately caught the attention of the police, prompting an investigation into the matter. Authorities suspect that climate activists may be responsible for the incident, as a previous occurrence of a similar nature had taken place in the past. Specifically, during the 34th Venice Biennale in 1968, artist Nicolás Garcia Uriburu intentionally dyed the canal waters to a strikingly similar hue to raise awareness about environmental concerns.
The Reason for the Incident Is Unknown
Recent environmental protests in Italy have included a demonstration in Rome on the 21st of May. During this event, activists from Ultima Generazione turned the Trevi fountain black by pouring diluted charcoal into the water. Despite their previous protest, the group has not claimed responsibility for the green hue in Venice.
The authorities have sought assistance from the Italian fire service to aid in their investigation, collecting water samples for testing purposes. Veneto region president, Luca Zaia, has expressed his concerns about the incident and emphasized the importance of identifying those responsible. In a reassuring tweet, he informed the public that an urgent meeting with the police had been convened by the prefect to delve into the origins of the mysterious liquid.
